SENSATIONAL SIGHT WORDS

Throughout the year your child will be learning all kinds of words; CVC words,

rhyming words, nonsense words, decodable words, and sight words.

Sight words are high-frequency words that we use each day. These words are

often times hard to "sound out" and should be recognized quickly by sight.

Here are some ideas to help your master their sight words:

                                1. Word wall ...read them nightly.

                                2. Circle the sight words you see in a magazine and/or newspaper.

                                3. Sight word Snow ball fight... have your child write the sight

on an individual piece of paper and crumple it up and you and your child

toss the crumpled sight words at each other and read the word you

                                     grabbed.

                                4.  Write your sight words on an index card and try putting them in order with pictures and have your child write them in a sentence.

    5. Sight Words in the Tub. Using foam sheets or precut foam shapes you write with a sharpie your sight words on one side and then have the child find the words with a small net or with their hands. Once they read the word correctly you can put it on the wall of the tub (yes they stick!) and continue on. If they don't know it goes back into the tub. Or you can just read them aloud together.

     6. Sight Word Spotlight game. You place sight words written on cards around the room, some high on the wall, on the ground, on the dresser etc., and then turn off the light. You go around the room using your flashlight to see how many words you can read. You can also have the words correspond to a book you're reading together and stop when a word you read is in the room and have them then go search for it before you continue.

Learning these sight words is essential to your child's reading success! Practicing with your child just a few minutes each night can make a big impact!
